The Modern Hermit project is an artistic intervention uniting immersive soundscapes, short films, text works and contemporary painting. By integrating dedicated seating and guided Attention Exercises, it transforms the exhibition site into a sanctuary for contemplation.

For the modern hermit, the hermitage is not a cabin in the woods or a cave in the mountains. It is an inner sanctuary – found within one's own mind, in the stillness of thought and in the conscious execution of one's actions.

To cultivate this, the heart of the project lies in the radical presence of the artists. Here, the work does not end at the frame. Its meaning is generated through the experience within the space. During the exhibition, the artists remain present to engage in direct, unmediated dialogue and participate alongside the audience in the guided Attention Exercises. This relational approach dissolves the traditional barrier between artist and observer, turning the sanctuary into a living space of shared human experience.

Following its successful debut at Alexanderplatz, Berlin, the project is evolving into a touring format, envisioning these contemplative spaces as temporary sanctuaries in diverse venues across Europe.

With concept and curation by Friedrich Adrian, it operates as a platform anchored by a core ensemble of resident artists and rotating guest features.
